Africa's premier blockchain conference and hackathon
Our mission is to empower Africa's builders to create world-changing blockchain solutions. We unite developers, innovators, and visionaries from across the continent and beyond in a space of collaboration, education, and creativity, fostering projects that drive real-world impact, champion open-source values, and accelerate Web3 adoption. By connecting global expertise with local talent, we aim to position Cape Town as a leading hub for decentralized innovation.
In April 2019, ETHCapeTown made history as Africa's first ETHGlobal hackathon at the V&A Waterfront's iconic Lookout venue. The weekend featured a high-impact fireside chat with Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who highlighted DeFi's potential to "disrupt finance" and urged participants to explore supply chain, identity, reputation, and insurance use cases beyond traditional financial applications.
Over three days, teams competed for more than US$15,000 in prize money sponsored by MakerDAO, NuCypher, Raiden, and ENS. Among 33 entries, standout projects ranged from NFT-based conservation tools to decentralized pay-as-you-go streaming apps. Winners included Wildcards, dTok, Snap, and Sebenzai, with 11 runner-ups earning additional awards.
ETHCapeTown returned after a five-year hiatus, sparking a powerful revival of Africa's most prominent Ethereum-focused hackathon. Taking place in the vibrant heart of Cape Town's V&A Waterfront, over 350 passionate hackers, blockchain enthusiasts, and industry leaders came together for three unforgettable days of innovation, collaboration, and community.
Participants built groundbreaking decentralized applications addressing real-world challengesโfrom financial inclusion and sustainability to identity and NFT-based ecosystems. The successful relaunch showcased the enormous talent and energy within the local Web3 community, reinforcing Cape Town's status as Africa's blockchain capital.
With one of the youngest, fastest-growing populations in the world, Africa is poised to become a global powerhouse for blockchain innovation โ and ETHCapeTown is where the builders of that future come together.
700,000+ Professional Developers Today โ Africa's tech talent is booming, with over 716,000 professional software developers in 2021โa 3.8% increase from the previous year.
